BRYNN are definitely one of those Cape Town based acts that you and I should see live when they make their way to Gauteng. I have to be dead honest that I’ve never heard of them before Up The Creek Festival 2018 but I’ve heard a lot of people saying that they’re an absolutely amazing live act.
I’m pretty sure that some of you might also be in the dark about them (especially if you’re in Gauteng)…
Here are 10 facts you did not know about BRYNN:
1. BRYNN started as three-piece acoustic/folk band over three years ago. They played mostly Damien Rice covers and a handful of gentle originals at tiny venues around Cape Town. The project moved from a three-piece to a solo act, then it eventually found itself with its final line up: Jules Terea, David Van Vuuren, Alex Smillie, Eddie Kriel and Hezron Chetty.
2. Their first show as a band was for the charity event called Tutufest where they played alongside Alice Phoebe Lou, Goodluck, Majozi and The Kiffness at Shimmy Beach Club.
3. They are tied closely together with two other acts: Southern Wild and Hezron Chetty &The Zug Zwang, both of which feature members from BRYNN. They proudly group the three acts as “brother bands” and they work together for some of their tours and shows.
4. Their drummer Eddy packs parachutes for skydivers by day and plays the drums by night. He lives in an aeroplane hangar and plays drums basically non-stop. He is also probably the most spectacularly polite man, perhaps ever.
5. Many hours were spent in Popsicle Studios by all the members of the band. Jules was present for every single session and meeting, clocking hundreds of hours over the entire album recording process.
6. Along with a handful of incredible local South African artists like Hellcats, BCUC, Dan Patlansky, Cortina Whiplash and Southern Wild, BRYNN was hand chosen by the band Incubus to open for them during their tour to South Africa.
7. They were originally going to call the band “The Brothers of Fynn” (Inspired by founding member Jules’ younger brother, Fynn). When researching the name, Jules found that “Brothers of Fynn” was already taken but then came across the name, BRYNN.
8. “Querencia” is described as a place where you feel your most authentic self. All of the songs on the album deal with this theme and its meaning in modern-day life. Exploring life’s purpose, frustrations, beauty and our place within it all.
9. They are fully independent. They have a close group of people who we work with on all their releases and tours and they release material completely independently without the assistance of any labels or record companies.
10. They are best friends and look after each other through thick and thin. They are like family.
I’d like to thank the band for these interesting facts about them and I hope that you’re feeling a little bit less in the dark now.
