In case you did not know, Chevelle is an American Rock band that has been making music for almost thirty years.
I first discovered their music in the late 90s / early 2000s and I was fortunate enough to see them live (and photograph them) in 2013 at the Big Top Arena at Carnival City (on the outskirts of Johannesburg).I really hope they make their way back to South Africa one day.
There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this band, but today my aim is to change that.

1. Chevelle was formed in 1995 in Grayslake, Illinois (a village located 64 km North of Chicago) when Pete Loeffler and Sam Loeffler started making music in their parents’ basement.
Bassist Matt Scott was also in the band until 1996. Their youngest brother Joe Loeffler joined the band replacing Scott. The band started playing small outdoor concerts and clubs around Chicago. Joe was only 14 years old at the time.
2. The band’s name comes from the band members’ passion for fast cars. It was also a car their father liked, the Chevrolet Chevelle.
3. Joe Loeffler left Chevelle in 2005. Geno Lenardo subbed in as the touring bassist until Joe was replaced by Pete and Sam’s brother-in-law, Dean Bernardini. Bernardini left the band in 2019. In 2021 Kemble Walters joined the band as a touring bassist.
4. To date the band has released 9 studio albums: Point #1 (1999), Wonder What’s Next (2002), This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In) (2004), Vena Sera (2007), Sci-Fi Crimes (2009), Hats Off to the Bull (2011), La Gárgola (2014), The North Corridor (2016) and NIRATIAS (2021).
5. Point #1 was released under the Squint Entertainment record label. Squint Entertainment is known for its focus on Christian music, although Chevelle’s music is not overtly religious. The album reached number 147 on the Billboard 200 chart.
6. Wonder What’s Next was a breakthrough album for Chevelle, propelling them to mainstream success. It remains one of their most successful and critically acclaimed albums. The album peaked at number 14 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified Platinum by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for selling over one million copies in the United States. The album spawned several hit singles, including “The Red,” “Send the Pain Below,” and “Closure.” These songs received significant radio airplay.
7. The lyrics of “The Red” are open to interpretation, but they touch on themes of frustration, inner turmoil, and the struggle to find one’s identity. The color red is used metaphorically to represent intense emotions and the desire for change.
8. The lyrics of “Send the Pain Below” delve into themes of emotional pain, inner struggles, and the desire to escape and find solace. The song expresses a sense of vulnerability and the need to move past the pain. The song earned Chevelle a nomination for Best Metal Performance at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards in 2004.
9. This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In) debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 chart. It achieved Gold certification by the RIAA for selling over 500,000 copies in the United States.
10. Vena Sera debuted at number 12 on the Billboard 200 chart, making it the band’s third consecutive top 20 album. The album produced several successful singles, including “Well Enough Alone,” “I Get It,” and “Saferwaters.”
11. The lyrics of “Well Enough Alone” touch on themes of self-reflection, frustration, and the desire to break free from stagnant situations. The song expresses a sense of discontent and the need for change.
12. Sci-Fi Crimes debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 chart. “Jars,” “Letter from a Thief,” and “Shameful Metaphors” were three of the singles off that album.
13. The lyrics of “Jars” explore themes of conformity, societal pressures, and the struggle to break free from the constraints of expectations. The song reflects a desire for individuality and the recognition of one’s own unique path.
14. Chevelle‘s Hats Off to the Bull debuted at number 19 on the Billboard 200 chart, making it Chevelle’s fifth consecutive top 20 album. Singles off this album include the title track “Hats Off to the Bull,” “Face to the Floor,” and “Same Old Trip.”
15. The lyrics of “Hats Off to the Bull” tackle themes of rebellion, resilience, and standing up against oppressive forces. The song encourages defiance and celebrates the strength to overcome challenges.
16. La Gárgola translates to “The Gargoyle” in English. The 2014 album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart, marking the band’s third consecutive top-five album. The list of singles off the album include “Take Out the Gunman,” “Hunter Eats Hunter,” and “An Island.”
17. The lyrics of Chevelle‘s “Take Out the Gunman” address the issue of gun violence and the negative impact it has on society. The song explores themes of fear, resistance, and the need to stand up against violence and injustice.
18. The North Corridor debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming Chevelle’s sixth consecutive top-10 album. “Joyride (Omen)” and “Door to Door Cannibals.” were the two singles off the album.
19. The lyrics of Chevelle‘s “Door to Door Cannibals” explore themes of manipulation, deceit, and the dark side of human nature. The song metaphorically depicts the predatory nature of certain individuals who exploit and consume others for their own gain.
20. NIRATAS is an acronym for “Nothing Is Real and This Is a Simulation”. It’s Chevelle‘s first album as a two-piece. It’s a concept album, with more instrumental and spoken word tracks, dealing with themes such as interstellar travel, mistrust in leadership, loss, and the past. “Self Destructor”, “Peach”, and “Remember When” were the three singles that were released off the album.
21. The lyrics of Chevelle‘s “Self Destructor” express raw emotions and introspective thoughts. The song highlights the internal struggles of battling one’s demons and the need to confront and overcome destructive patterns.
