The Ocean are a German progressive metal band that have been around for more than 20 years. They were recently announced as one of the international headliners for RAMFest 2023 (a festival that will be hosted in Stellenbosch and Pretoria in South Africa). The other international headliner on the line-up is Enter Shikari.
There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this band, but today my aim is to change that…
Here are 12 Interesting Facts You Might Not Know about The Ocean
1. The Ocean was founded in 2000 by guitarist and songwriter Robin Staps.
2. The band hails from Berlin, Germany.
3. Robin Staps (on guitar, programming and backing vocals), Loïc Rossetti (on lead vocals), Paul Seidel (on drums and backing vocals), Mattias Hägerstrand (on bass), David Ramis Åhfeldt (on guitar) and Peter Voightmann (on synths) are the current members of The Ocean.
4. Between 2000 and 2002 about 40 musicians joined and left the band until a stable line-up was established.
5. To date the band have released nine studio albums: Fluxion (2004), Aeolian (2006), Precambrian (2007), Heliocentric (2010), Anthropocentric (2010), Pelagial (2013), Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic (2018), Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic / Cenozoic (2020) and Holocene (2023).
6. Their musical style has been described by different sources as progressive metal, post-metal, sludge metal, extreme metal, and avant-garde metal.
7. Sometimes the band is known as The Ocean Collective as it features a revolving cast of members and (long-time) collaborators, centered around guitarist and composer Robin Staps.
8. On 21 September 2020, ophiacantha oceani (a brittle star fossil discovered by palaeontologists Dr. Lea Numberger and Dr. Ben Thuy at the Natural History Museum of Luxembourg) was named in honor of the band.
9. Their 2006 album Aeolian refers to the geological process of wind erosion shaping the Earth’s surface. It’s a concept album which explores themes of nature, the destructive forces of wind, and the impact of human existence on the environment.
10. Conceptually, The Ocean‘s 2010 album Heliocentric focuses on challenging religious dogma and exploring scientific and philosophical perspectives on the origins of the universe and human existence. The album’s title refers to the heliocentric model of the solar system, which places the sun at the center. Lyrically, the album delves into topics such as cosmology, evolution, and the human quest for meaning.
11. Anthropocentric (which was also released in 2010) is the companion album to Heliocentric. The album delves into the concept of human-centeredness and the impact of human existence on the world.
The ablum explores the belief that human beings are the central or most significant entities in the universe, and the consequences of such a perspective. The album questions the notion of human exceptionalism and examines the destructive effects of human actions on the environment, other species, and ourselves.
12. The Ocean is known for their captivating live performances. They have toured extensively around the world, sharing the stage with notable acts like Opeth, Devin Townsend, and Between the Buried and Me.
