The Police were an English rock band formed in London in 1977. The band consisted of Sting (lead vocals, bass), Andy Summers (guitar) and Stewart Copeland (drums).
They were one of the most successful and innovative bands of the late 70s and early 80s, blending reggae, rock and punk to create a unique sound. There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this band, but today my aim is to change that.
Here are 10 Interesting Facts You Might Not Know About The Police
1. Sting (real name Gordon Sumner) saw the phrase “The Police” on the side of a police car while he was walking down the street in London. He was struck by the simplicity and strength of the name, and decided to use it for his band. The name not only reflected the punk and reggae influences in their music, but also reflected the social and political themes that were present in many of their songs.
2. “Roxanne” (the band’s debut single) was released in 1978. The song is a story about a man who falls in love with a prostitute. The song was a hit in the UK, reaching number 32 on the charts. The track was released on the band’s first album (Outlandos d’Amour).
3. The band won six Grammy Awards during their career, including Best Rock Instrumental Performance and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group.
4. The band released five studio albums: Outlandos d’Amour (1978), Reggatta de Blanc (1979), Zenyatta Mondatta (1980), Ghost in the Machine (1981) and Synchronicity (1983).
5. “Every Breath You Take” (which was released in 1983) became the biggest hit of The Police‘s career, topping charts around the world and winning two Grammy Awards. The song’s lyrics have been interpreted in various ways, with some listeners seeing them as a haunting declaration of love, while others view them as a creepy stalker’s anthem. The song continues to receive airplay on classic rock radio and is frequently covered and remixed by other artists.
6. The Police officially disbanded in 1986, but they have reunited several times for tours and special events.
7. In 2003 The Police were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
8. Reggatta de Blanc was the first album by a rock band to reach number one on the UK charts.
9. The Police have sold over 75 million records, making them one of the best-selling bands of all time.
10. Synchronicity was The Police’s most successful album, reaching number one on the charts in both the United States and the UK. The album addresses themes of social and political issues, including globalization, consumerism, and the modern world. The album’s cover art features a photograph of a diver diving into water, which was meant to symbolize the themes of the album.
