In case you did not know, The Tazers are a South African psych-rock band from Johannesburg. The band has its roots stuck in the 1970s while incorporating modern sounds and structures.
There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this band, but today my aim is to change that…
Here are 12 Interesting Facts You Might Not Know about The Tazers
1. The band was officially formed in 2015 when frontman Jethro Lock wanted to channel ‘electric’ energy into his songwriting.
2. In 2015 the band needed a bassist when a friend of Jethro recommended that Guido Assman fill the role. The band asked him to join a practice and the rest is history.
3. Guido Assman left the band in late 2021 and was replaced by Werner Jordaan.
4. Jethro Lock, Tim Edwards and Werner Jordaan are the current members of The Tazers. Francis Broek has also played drums for the band for one leg of one of their European tours.
5. To date the band has released one studio album: Plastic Kids (in 2019). The Tazers have also released 4 EPs: Time Machine (in 2016), Love Machine (in 2017), Dream Machine (in 2021) and Outer Space (in 2022).
6. The Tazers were nominated for Best Rock Album at the 2020 South African Music Awards (SAMAs).
7. The band have played at almost every major music festival in South Africa. The list includes Lush Festival, Smoking Dragon Festival, Oppikoppi and Mieliepop festival.
8. A snippet of their song “Go Away” was featured in an episode of Showtime’s Shameless in 2021.
9. Their song”Wake Up” is about the conflict between fantasy and reality, yearning for connection, and the desire to let go of daydreams and embrace what is genuine. It could be interpreted as a call for self-awareness and living in the present rather than being lost in dreams.
10. Their song “Shake It” is about a guy’s internal struggle between being a gentleman and a patient wolf – a battle between sincere affection and a more opportunistic approach to pursuing a girl.
11. Their song “Ready To Die” explore themes of mortality, fear of death, and the pursuit of escapism through drug use.
12. The Tazers are playing at the Pretoria edition of RAMFest 2023 on the 2nd of September.
