    1990 was a very interesting year. I was only 13 years old at that stage in my life, but I still remember a lot of things that happened. The sole purpose of this post is to make you all feel old and if you weren’t born yet, the purpose of this post is to educate you.

    Here are 6 notable events in 1990

    1. Nelson Mandela was released from prison

    This happened on the 11th of February 1990. This happened a few days after former South African President FW De Klerk announced the end of Apartheid in South Africa and unbanned the ANC, SACP and PAC. Mandela went on to become the first democratically elected president of the country in 1994.

    2. The most complete skeleton of a T-Rex was found in South Dakota in the USA

    This happened on the 12th of August. The skeleton was 90% complete and named Sue. Today it’s on display in the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois. The museum bought the skeleton for $8 million.

    3. The demolition of the Berlin Wall started in June 1990

    The re-unification process of East Germany and West Germany finished by October 1990. Helmut Kohl became the first chancellor of the re-united German state. The Berlin Wall was constructed in 1961 by the Socialist / Communist East German government to stop the migration of East Germans to the Democratic West.

    4. Namibia gained its independence from South Africa

    This happened on the 21st of March 1990. Sam Nujoma became the first president of Namibia was re-elected twice after his first presidential term. Namibia was previously known as German South-West Africa and South-West Africa.

    5. Margaret Thatcher resigned as the British Prime Minister

    This happened on the 28th of November 1990. She was the British Prime Minister from 1979 and the leader of the British Conservative Party from 1975. She was succeeded by John Major.

    6. Some great movies were released and some great shows aired on television

    In 1990, Twin Peaks, Northern Exposure, Beverly Hills 90210, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Blossom, In Living Color and Evening Shade aired on television for the first time and Home Alone, Ghost, Dances With Wolves, Pretty Woman, The Hunt For Red October, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Die Hard 2: Die Harder were the biggest grossing films of the year.
