The 100: 21 Interesting Facts You Might Not Know

The 100 is one of my favourite Science Fiction TV shows. I’ve been following it since it first aired way back in 2014. The show is set ninety-seven years after a nuclear war has destroyed civilization, when a spaceship housing humanity’s lone survivors sends 100 juvenile delinquents back to Earth, in hopes of possibly re-populating the planet. There’s probably a lot that you don’t know about this show, but today I’m changing that.

Here are 21 Facts that you might not have known about The 100

    1. The series was developed by Jason Rothenberg. It’s loosely based on the The 100  novel series by Kass Morgan. The series actually started filming before the first book was released. There are 4 books in the series.

    2. Trigedasleng, the language spoken by the grounders, was created by the same person who created Dothraki, the language spoken in Game of Thrones. David J. Peterson is the genius behind both the created languages.

    3. Eliza Jane Taylor (Clarke Griffin) and Bob Morley (Bellamy Blake) announced on their social medial on the 8th June 2019 that they were married. This was a shock to fans of the show who had no idea the pair were romantically linked.

    4. Since its release in 2014, The 100 is the most watched show in its time slot on The CW.

    5. The character Octavia is only 14 in the books, much younger than her age of almost 18 in the show.

    6. Much of the the series music score is inspired from the Fallout game series.

    7. Not only were Eliza Taylor and Bob Morley both in Neighbours but so was Dichen Lachman (Anya). All three of them are Australian actors.

    8. Raven was initially going to be killed off in Season 1. However, the producers eventually decided against this and instead promoted Lindsey Morgan to a series regular for Season 2.

    9. Though the picturesque and almost surreal scenes set in the jungle could easily have been replicated using a green screen, this wasn’t the case. All of the jungle scenes are actually set in a lush, green area and are as beautiful in real life as they are on screen.

    10. The character of Lincoln is played by Ricky Whittle. Whittle also appears in an episode of NCIS in which he plays a character called Lincoln! The episode is called “Detour.”

    11. Most of the filming of The 100 is done in Vancouver, Canada.

    12. The 100 won a Saturn Award for Best Youth-Oriented Series in 2015. An IGN award for Best TV Sci-Fi Series in both 2014 and 2015, and another IGN People’s Choice Award for Best TV Sci-Fi Series in 2015. Lastly, Linna Renna won a Joey Award in 2018 for Best Actress in a Guest Star Role.

    13. South African actor Neil Sandilands appeared in 6 episodes of the series. He played the role of the character Titus.

    14. Marie Avgeropoulos (who plays fan favorite Octavia Blake) was twenty-eight at the time of her casting as the youngest of all the teens. Not only does Avgeropoulos blend in with the rest of the cast, but she actually looks younger than several of the costars that are a few years her junior.

    15. Eliza Taylor actually never auditioned for the role of Clarke.

    16. Clarke is named after Arthur C. Clarke. He was the author of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Other characters were also named for sci-fi authors as well. Octavia was named after award-winning novelist Octavia E. Butler, and Bellamy was named for utopian author Edward Bellamy.

    17. Jason Rothenberg is working on a prequel for The 100. The prequel series is set to show the events 97 years before the original series, beginning with the nuclear apocalypse that wiped out almost all life on Earth.

    18. The show was able to complete filming of the 7th season despite the fact that Warner Bros. shut down production of all their TV shows due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    19. The 100‘s seventh season is the last season of the show.

    20. Niylah (Jessica Harmon) is actually the older sister (by 6 years) of John Murphy (Richard Harmon).

    21. One of the plot holes is the “197 years until a safe return to Earth time frame”. It’s ridiculous… For example, the radiation fallout from the 1986 Chernobyl disaster is expected to make the affected areas uninhabitable for at least 20,000 years.

Well, there you have it, 21 facts you might not have know about The 100. I hope that you’ve learned something today that you didn’t know before.
