Wolfmother made their way to South Africa in August 2014. They headlined Oppikoppi festival and also played a show in Cape Town. It was one of the musical highlights of the year in South Africa. They have not been back, but I am hoping that they will grace us with their presence again one day.
There’s probably quite a bit that you don’t know about Wolfmother, but today my aim is to change that.
Here are 10 Interesting Wolfmother Facts You Might Not Know
1. Wolfmother was formed in 2000 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
2. Andrew Stockdale, Hamish Rosser and Bobby Poulton are the current members of the band.
3. The list of former members of Wolfmother include Myles Heskett, Chris Ross, Ian Peres, Dave Atkins, Aidan Nemeth, Will Rockwell-Scott, Elliott Hammond and Vin Steele.
4. To date the band have released six studio albums: Wolfmother (in 2005), Cosmic Egg (in 2009). New Crown (in 2014), Victorious (in 2016), Rock’n’Roll Baby (2019) and Rock Out (2021).
5. The band’s hit single, “Woman” is commonly mistaken for a Led Zeppelin song (thanks to Andrew Stockdale’s vocal style). Forced to address this issue in the press the band have claimed that they’re not trying to emulate the 1970’s classic rock icons at all. Stockdale sings about a very appealing woman who understands him.
6. The band hit song, “Joker and the Thief” (which was inspired by Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower”) has been used in films like Jackass Number Two, Shrek The Third, The Hangover and Here Comes the Boom, featured in commercials for Peugeot and Mitsubishi and was also used in Need for Speed: Carbon. According to Stockdale, this was the result when he decided that he wanted to write a stadium rock song.
7. The band got their name from a book called Skinny Legs and All (by Tom Robbins). They told the people who offered them a show they were Wolfmother and from there on everyone was like, “so have you heard of those Wolfmother guys?’, so the name stuck.
8. To date the band has won 3 APRA Awards, 3 ARIA Awards, 1 Grammy Award, 1 J Award and 1 Jack Award. They’ve also been nominated for BRIT Awards and MTV Australia Awards.
9. Music critics and fans have labeled Wolfmother‘s music as hard rock / stoner rock / heavy metal / neo-psychedelia.
10. The album name “Cosmic Egg”‘ comes from a position in yoga best described by Andrew Stockdale as “like the fetal pose”.
